3 Strength & Track Workouts to Add to Your Running Routine

To say that I’ve been dragging my feet ever since working my way back to running after having my gallbladder out in July wouldn’t be far from the truth. 

It’s not that I haven’t been running…because I have…it’s just that I’ve been a little lack luster or not really that motivated to spend my workout time pounding the pavement.  Honestly, most of my runs during the week have been tempo or interval runs and my long runs on the weekend have been no further than 8 miles.

YES, I have Ragnar coming up this weekend so you would THINK that I would be all gung-ho but I’m all like “woo – I’ve done this before, it’s not that hard….I’m just gonna have fun” instead. 

Which is fine.  Having fun is what running is really about about.  But when it comes time for the Syracuse Half Marathon in November, I need to start actually focusing on training and focusing a little less on fun. 

Thankfully, I’ve been here before.  I go through phases and get caught up in this funk where I need something a little extra to motivate me to get my run in.  

When this happens, I generally combine my first love – strength training with the Ultimate Sandbag with speed work, WHICH I also happen to love…it’s just sometimes I love it more when it’s broken up with other exercises! 

Strength & Track Workouts to Add to Your Running Routine

Below are three of my very favorite ways to incorporate strength exercises with my running routine.  All three are very different but include exercises that are geared toward runners to strengthen key muscles and prevent injuries.

The first focuses on key core exercises that are essential for runners – planks, glute bridges and bird dogs ALL kicked up a notch by using the Ultimate Sandbag Core Bag to perform them!
