5 Fun Ways to Stay Active Outdoors This Fall
While most people long for summer days where they can go for a swim in the pool or catch some waves with their SUP at the beach, fall has always been more my style when it comes to sweating.
As a runner, summer means getting up early to get my run in before the sun and heat. It means dealing with humidity and bugs and chaffage…and did I mention humidity? Yeah, summer might be for some but as someone who LOVE the outdoors, it isn’t for me.
Like I said, fall is my jam. It’s what I affectionately call “sweater weather”. The temperatures are mild, there are less bugs flying around, the leaves are changing and the air is cool and crisp. It’s is perfect for running without having to get up at the crack of dawn to beat the heat. It’s also perfect for a myriad of other active outdoor activities especially here in Upstate, New York.
Disclosure: prAna provided me with some super comfy clothes to try. As always, all opinions are my own.
If you know anything about New York State in the fall then you know we are known for apple picking, pumpkin picking and all sorts of super obvious fall activities. Don’t get me wrong, I love those too but there are also other fun activities that will not only work up a little bit of a sweat but also help you connect with nature too.
I recently spent Labor Day weekend up at my Dad’s camp in the North Country and participated in some of my very favorite fall activities. While it might not be fall (officially), this weekend brought some cooler weather here so I took advantage, broke out my favorite comfy prAna wear.
Maybe it doesn’t seem like a glamorous activity but there is just something about the birds chirping, breathing in the fresh air and the sounds of the water rippling that just brings some sort of calmness. It’s an incredibly peaceful activity that no only has mental health benefits but also gets you physically active. Whether you realize it or not, every time you cast, you work you’re giving your arms a workout – building the deltoid, bicep and forearm muscles!
Take a hike!
Seems like an obvious activity but when is the last time you hit your local trails? When I think of being active in autumn, hiking is such a perfect way to really enjoy the changing foliage and take in all the sights and sounds of nature as you make your way up to the summit. It is also a great way to build endurance, muscle strength and improve mental health since it helps relieve both stress and anxiety!
Go canoeing or kayaking!
Another way to enjoy nature while staying active is by canoeing or kayaking. Not only is it relaxing and a fun way to get out on the water while staying dry (it is sweater weather, after all), it’s also a great way to work up a bit of a sweat. Both paddling and rowing actions provide a full body workout while being pretty low impact meaning that it’s a great way for those who can’t run to work up a sweat!
Take the pup for a walk!
I don’t know about you but if it’s hot and sweaty out, I don’t want to be outside getting even hot and sweatier so why in the world would your pup? Personally, my pup (who is part pug) and I prefer to get in a nature walk when the air is easier to breathe in and my sweat isn’t sweating before I even start moving. Taking the pooch for a walk is not only a great cardiovascular activity but is great mental stimulation for both you and the dog!
Practice yoga or meditate.
I am not exactly a yogi BUT since September is National Yoga Month, I have committed myself to practice a little daily or at the very least, meditate. As any yogi will tell you, practicing outdoors is incredibly peaceful, relaxing and can really enhance the experience.
Of course, attire for all of this matters and as I mentioned before, I am a huge fan of prAna! The top that I am wearing is the Daria Sweater Hoodie in Muted Truffle. It’s super comfy (perfect for sweater weather) and made of lightweight organic cotton.
The bottoms I am wearing are the Deco Crop which is an athletic compression capri made from Chakara® Performance Stretch Jersey with Lycra®. Their mid-rise (which I love because it helps tuck in the tummy), moisture wicking and also features a hidden mesh key pocket. I also love the novelty strap at the leg opening because it adds a little functional style.
Right now through the next 4 weeks (until October 4th) you can save 15% off your purchase at prAna using code MHMAA15.
