Be A SmartyPants About Fiber: Important Benefits To Know
When you think about eating or what to feed your kids usually factors like calories, sugar, fat and carbs all come to mind. Very rarely does fiber factor into play, but it should. Fiber has a variety of benefits for both adults and children outside of just keeping the digestive system on schedule. In fact, it has a lot of other important health benefits that you might not be aware of. Here are just a few:
Health Benefits of Fiber
1. Keeps you fuller, longer.
Okay, so you might have known that BUT did you know that it since it keeps you full you (and the kids) are less likely to consume foods high in sugar and fat? It also means that you’re less likely to overeat therefore preventing obesity.
2. Maintains gut health.
Aside from keeping you regular, fiber in the diet also help maintain gut health. Including fiber in your diet may help prevent such issues as diverticulitis and hemorrhoids and keep everything happy and in working order.
3. Keeps blood sugar steady
Fiber helps to regulate blood sugar by increasing the glycemic index of carbohydrates. Since your body processes fiber-rich carbs differently than simple carbs it results in less of a spike in high blood sugar which also helps to control hunger. Or simply put, carbs with fiber are better for ya! 😉
While it would be ideal for us and our children to get the recommended amount of fiber in our diet, that isn’t always easy especially when it comes to the little picky eaters in our lives.
I’ve talked a few times about how picky my 4 year old is and how much of a struggle to get her to eat on a regular basis. Thankfully, she is doesn’t even give me a fight when it comes to taking her vitamins, especially when they are in gummy form!
