Beet Yesterday Pre-Workout Smoothie

There are some people who like to wake up and workout or run on an empty stomach.  Then there are some people who absolutely NEED something to eat before they run or they will pass out and die.

Okay, I am being a bit dramatic but as someone who suffers from being *rungry* 95% of the time, it certainly feels that way.

Anyway, my point being is that sometimes you need a little somethin’-somethin’ before you sweat it all out.

On days when my runs or workouts are shorter I am A-OKAY with just rollin’ out of bed and getting down to business.  HOWEVER, now that half marathon training has kicked in and my runs are getting longer, I need something to keep me going.

Enter, this Beet Yesterday Pre-Workout Smoothie.  Punny, no?

Beet Yesterday Pre-Workout Smoothie {gluten free, dairy free}

Clearly if I was going to make a beet smoothie, there had to be some sort of pun involved with the name but seriously, pre-workout beet smoothies are where it’s at!

According to certain science, beets are rich in nitrates which convert to nitric oxide which can increase blood flow to muscles.  I am not a dietician but I have personally used beet juice and powders pre-workout and have to say that they do make a noticeable difference.  I feel more energized and ready to tackle the task at hand.

While you could cook beets and blend them fresh (ya know, if ya had all that time), I prefer to use a powder and my favorite is Healthy Skoop Ignite Sweet Beet Performance Blend.  To put it simply, it has all the benefits of beets (speeds recovery) with a little bit of sweet (because beets on their own can taste kinda like dirt) but blended with raspberries and honey crystals creating the most vibrant smoothie you’ll ever see.

Another reason that I like pre-workout smoothies is that they’re easier to digest than a big meal.  I am all for oatmeal if I have a few hours but if I need to get up, eat something and hit the pavement shortly after then a pre-workout smoothie is my go-to!
