Benefits of Compression for Running Performance

Back a long, long time ago when I first started running (literally only like 4 years ago), I began my journey naively believing that you only needed the clothes on your back and a pair of shoes.

Now, years later, I realize that is just not true.  Not only do you need a good pair of properly fitting running shoes, you need the right pair of socks, GPS watch, ways to hydrate, tools to recover and of course, the proper running apparel.

The novice runner in me didn’t understand that running in cotton clothes leads to chaffing or that you could actively fight muscle fatigue while on the run.  It didn’t take me long to learn though.  After a few showers that set my chaffage on fire, I realized it was time to get serious about my running apparel and not just for fashion purposes.

While I have been slowly upgrading all my running clothes and gear, the first and most important thing I did was find myself a pair of compression tights.  Not only were they more comfortable to run in, they were oh so necessary.

You see, compression tights don’t just look sleek while you sweat, they also serve a purpose.  In fact, they can help to benefit your running performance, like so:

Keeps muscles warm.

Due to the fact that compression material is form fitting, it helps to trap in the heat keeping the legs warm which prevents muscle strain.  It also helps to prevent muscle fatigue since it keeps the blood flowing.

Wicks away sweat.

One of the main benefits of compression tights is that they prevent chafing.  Unlike cotton and other yoga-type leggings, compression tights are made of a material that helps to wick away moisture and sweat.  Anything you can do to prevent chaffing is a must.  If for nothing else, buy compression for this reason.

Reduces recovery time.

One of my very favorite reasons to wear compression gear is for the recovery benefits.  Since compression keeps the muscles in place (less wiggle room), the impact while running is lessened which results in less fatigue.  That translates into quicker recovery time after your run or race is over.

So what compression pants to pick? Well, like anything when it comes to running gear, the options are endless but picking the right tights are imperative to maximizing your benefits.

Not only do they need to have the correct amount of compression but they also need to be stylish too and these DNAmic Compression Tights from SKINS totally fit the bill!

Skins 2

This post is sponsored by SKINS in partnership with Fit Approach but as always, all opinions are my own.

Apart from being functional, they are also fashionable too.  I am seriously loving the color contrast of the black and limoncello on these tights.  The pop of color is fun but not so overwhelming that you’re blinded.  They also offer 50+ UV Protection which is a MUST for summer running.

Aside from the controlled compression, I found the fit to be pretty on point for me.  Based on their SKIN Fit sizing system, I was able to tell what size would fit me best and ordered accordingly and they fit like a glove.  Not too loose and definitely not so tight that you can’t move.

Honestly, I can be VERY picky about my compression tights now that I have been the last several years upgrading my wardrobe and have to say that I am a huge fan.  They offer everything I am looking for plus they make my bottom look good- can’t argue with that, right?!
