How to Channel Your Inner Athlete and Get Ready for the Winter Games

Just this past fall, I was up in Lake Placid which hosted the Winter Games back in 1980 and is still home to a training center for competing athletes.

I happened to be out to dinner there at one of my fav little restaurants only to see 4 men from the US bobsled team walk in and casually sit down at the bar.  I was immediately intrigued, mostly because I was curious about their fueling habits.  What would they choose to eat? Would they have a drink? I did my best to be inconspicuous but I’m pretty sure they felt me staring at them from the corner of my eye.

To be honest, I can’t remember exactly what they ordered but I do remember thinking “don’t deny yourself the yumminess, you train really hard”.  As I placed my order, I was just as much talking to them in my head as I was to myself 😉

As someone who is active and even by some standards athletic, I always am inspired when I watch the Winter Games let alone see athletes of such stature in person.  To say I was in awe is an understatement, to say I was gawking might be more accurate.  Regardless, the Winter Games hold a special place in my heart – watching the best of the best ski, skate and sled channels my inner athlete, not just in the way I train but the steps I take to keep myself happy and healthy.

Snack Smarter.

Not that I’m a professional athlete but if I was, I’d probably want a snack or two after all my hard work.  Of course, reaching for just any old snack won’t do but something like healthy Popchips, snackable Peanut Butter Nutter Puffs would probably do the trick.  Not only are they gluten free but they have 5 grams of protein per serving.

To be honest, I am not typically crazy over everything peanut butter (as in, I usually avoid it) but I have to say that these non-GMO puffs are pretty darn delicious.

In fact, as I was snapping pictures to share with you…I ate 1/2 of the bag without realizing it.  Good thing they’re only 130 calories…which, to be honest, fueled like 1/3 of my workout this morn! 😛

Celebrate Simply.

I would like to think that all these athletes working so hard at the Winter Games would celebrate with a brew or two after a medal winning performance.  I say brew only because it rhymes with two but to be honest, I’ve never really thought about WHAT they might choose to drink… until recently when I tried a White Claw® Hard Seltzer.

Seriously though, I heard a TON of amazing things about White Claw® Hard Seltzer but usually fizzy drinks just aren’t my thing and I figured they’d be too sweet anyhow.  To put it frankly, I dismissed the idea of even trying one because I’m a little bit stubborn in my ways.

Then, I was literally given the chance to try all four of their 100 calorie hard seltzer flavors (Black Cherry, Ruby Grapefruit, Natural Lime and Raspberry) and I threw caution to the wind and took a chance.

HANDS DOWN, I would totally celebrate any victory with the Ruby Grapefruit or the Lime regardless now matter how small.  Both were crisp and not overly sweet at all.  I did sip the Black Cherry which wasn’t my fav and didn’t even try the Raspberry because I had a bad experience with raspberry vodka in college….and, yeah.

Anywho, long story short, if you’re looking for a simple drink to celebrate while watching the Winter Games WITHOUT any artificial non-sense that’s low in calories and in sugar (but has 5% ABV) then White Claw® Hard Seltzer will be your new JAM.

Bee Healthy.

I tried real hard to come up with a more clever way to tell you keep your inner athlete healthy, naturally but “bee healthy ” kinda says it all.

You may or may not know that bees produce some seriously awesome stuff.  Like honey, pollen and even something called propolis (aka “bee glue”).

While I am not a bee fan in general (like, I will scream running if a bee is within 10 feet of me), I AM a fan of all the bee benefits and have been for quite some time.  BEE & YOU is a company that harnesses those benefits directly from the hive!

BEE & YOU Royal Jelly Raw Honey is literally a biologically active powerhouse of nutrients that you can spread on toast or add to your oatmeal to fuel your workouts.  Not only can it help to boost the immune system it also increases energy and endurance, improves focus and enhances muscle building and repair.

BEE & YOU Propolis Raw Honey Throat Spray contains proven antibacterial, antibiotic and antiseptic properties that I have to say, work for me like a charm! I have been using the throat spray ever since getting it to test out (to ward off a nagging cold and prevent further sickness before surgery) and now I am not sure I can ever live without it.

Not only does it not upset my tummy lick typical cold meds do but it also has at least 80 times more antioxidant content than pomegranate juice….can’t really argue with that.

Stay Connected.

Obviously, an important part of enjoy the Winter Games is being able to stay connected wherever you go.  Many of us will do this by listening or streaming the games during train commutes or, like me, just trying to listen without screaming children interrupting.

For those of us that have AirPods, something like this PodPocket would come in handy.  A lot of people I know who use AirPods tend to lose them since they’re wireless but this PodPocket acts as an AirPod holder made of high grade silicone to provide a snug fit for the AirPod charing case.  It also has an nifty keyring which allow you to attach it to your bag or keychain so you there’s less chance of losing it!

What is your favorite winter sport?

How will you be channeling your inner athlete?

I'm all about honey these days since I'm seeing so many kids with coughs! We recommend honey over any cough medicine. Good stuff!

I am looking forward to the winter Olympics. I think I love all the events.

I need to remember to watch the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics this weekend! Figure skating is definitely my favorite event. That's cool that you got to see the bobsledding athletes - you should have said hi! The Nutter Puffs look very interesting!

I am excited to watch the Olympics! My favorite winter sport is cross country skiing. I'm all about the natural healing properties of honey - I mix some with lemon juice and hot water when not feeling well.

Sounds like some pretty awesome loot. I don't have air buds -- I'm old school! -- but I would definitely need the pod pocket if I did. :)

I love that White Claw seltzer! If you want an easy drink that's not wine and not a mixed drink-- it's perfect... especially if you don't really like beer. Can't wait for the Olympics to start!!
