Cucumber & Dill Tzatziki Dip {Dairy Free}

Dairy Free Tzatziki Dip that’s perfect with pitas for a party or drizzling over burger for dinner! 

Being part Lebanese, some of my cuisine growing up centered around foods that involved the use of yogurt as a sauce. While I have never actually been a huge fan of yogurt itself and have known from a pretty early age that I can’t tolerate yogurt, the one exception that I always made was for tzatziki.  

I don’t know why I love it so much but I do, especially during the summer.  I love how fresh the cucumbers make it taste and I am practically obsessed with the flavor of dill.  In fact, I think I could eat pretty much anything if it was covered in tzatziki sauce …if only I didn’t have to deal with the stomach upset afterward.  

Anyway, after years of making the exception and suffering the consequences, I decided it was time to give a dairy free version a try.

In order to make this dairy free, I decided to use a can of full fat coconut milk.  The idea itself isn’t revolutionary, in fact, it’s been my dairy free substitute for a long time now.  I use it to make Alfredo sauce so why not tzatziki sauce?! 

The only pain is that you have to refrigerate the can about 24 hours ahead of time which isn’t that big of a deal as long as you plan ahead.  The reasoning is that you need to separate the fat from the water and putting it in the fridge helps make that happen.  

The other alternative to using coconut milk would be to use dairy free greek yogurt – most of them are soy based though or also use coconut or almond milk as a base so it’s almost easier and cheaper to just plan ahead and use the can.

I also chose to go the cucumber and dill route with this dip as it is the traditional tzatziki ingredients though there is a Lebanese yogurt sauce version that uses mint instead and also tastes pretty amazing.  

It all really comes down to preference- I just happen to be a dill gal so fresh dill and LOTS of it, it was!

Oh and don’t let me forget to mention the GRILLED gluten free pita bread!

To be honest, I kinda hacked this “pita bread” as there was none available where I lived so I simply took an Udi’s Gluten Free Pizza Crust, brushed some olive oil on it, slapped it on a hot grill for 3 minutes or so, cut into triangles and voilà- you have perfectly portion pieces of pita bread 😉

Dairy Free Cucumber & Dill Tzatziki Sauce with Grilled Gluten Free Pita Bread! Perfect dip for a summer party or even to top burgers and meatballs with!




  • 1 can full fat coconut milk, refrigerated for 24 hours 
  • 1 English cucumber, ends trimmed & diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 1-2 tbsp fresh dill, chopped 
  • Pinch of sea salt or to taste 



  1. Remove can of coconut milk from fridge and separate solid (fat) from the liquid (water).  Discard water. 
  2. In a medium bowl, mix cucumber, garlic, lemon and dill until combined. 
  3. Season with salt to taste.  
  4. Serve chilled with pita bread for dipping. 


NOTES: I DID NOT peel the cucumber as many recipes instruct- I simply just cut it into quarter sections and pulsed in the food processor on low until diced.  I also used the food processor to mince the garlic- SO much easier than chopping 😉
