Dairy Free Chocolate Peppermint Smoothie

‘Tis the season for twinkly tree lights, yuletide celebration, caroling, and everything jolly.

It’s also the season for comfort foods and festive flavors such as gingerbread, sugarplums and of course, all things peppermint.  In fact, just the other day my generous father-in-law gifted my two darling children FOUR boxes of peppermint and chocolate peppermint candy canes.

My first reaction was to secretly trash half of the stash but instead as I stared at this newly acquired large quantity of candy canes, I was inspired to make this smoothie instead.

Dairy Free Chocolate Peppermint Smoothie

Lately I have been on a festive smoothie kick and figured that I couldn’t get through the holiday season without sharing something peppermint themed and having boxes of spare candy canes laying around gave me the opportunity to make it happen.

I also happened to have a bottle of peppermint oil in the cupboard.  I use it mostly for sinus care and will sprinkle a few drops when I take a hot shower though it can honestly be used for everything from muscle rub to allergy relief and even bug repellent.

Peppermint oil is also commonly used for flavoring foods and beverages and has even been said to help relieve digestive distress.  Given the chaos of the holidays and the tendency to reach for comfort food, I figured that adding a few drops in would not only give this smoothie the festive flavor it needs but also might aid in settling some tummy troubles caused by all the holiday stress.

Combine the benefits and flavor of peppermint with the richness of chocolate flavored almond butter and plant protein powder and you’ve got yourself one marvelously merry smoothie.
