Deliciously Simple Garlic Rapini Pizza {Gluten Free, Dairy Free}

Rapini, or Broccoli Rabe or Raab (or whatever you want to call it, it goes by a variety of different names) is a green cruciferous vegetable that kinda looks like broccoli but isn’t.  In fact, it’s actually closely related to turnips.  Strange right? 

While not common to most people, it is something that I eat almost every other day.  I was first introduced to it when I met my husband, who is not only an awesome unofficial chef but also comes from a very strong Italian family.

Often Sunday dinners with his family will consist of sauce, pasta and some sort of greens.  Sometimes those greens are escarole (which I’ve made a healthy dish with here), broccolini (which is NOT broccoli/rapini/broccoli rabe/raab) OR rapini.  The rapini is often cooked and prepared with just olive oil, garlic and red pepper.  Pretty straight forward, nothing crazy but always yummy. 

Over the last several years I have even come to prefer rapini/broccoli rabe over other greens…I find it to be much gentler on my stomach and easier to digest.  Whether that has to do with the fact that it isn’t actually broccoli or it’s just that it’s cooked a little more, I am not sure.  What I do know is that it tastes amazing on pizza.

The idea of putting rapini on pizza isn’t really new but it is the first time I have ever made it.  Honestly, if you’re not a fan of tomato sauce and prefer a “white” pizza then putting rapini on it is a great way to jazz up the flavor along with adding some nutritional value.

While making it does involves prepping the rapini by flash boiling it before hand, it’s totally worth it and if you use a frozen gluten free pizza crust, it takes no time at all.

Easy and delicious Garlic Rapini PIzza recipe perfect to refuel with after a long run or for a party appetizer or fun Friday night in! {gluten free, dairy free}

Garlic Rapini Pizza {Gluten Free, Dairy Free}



  • 1 head of rapini, rinsed 
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced 
  • 3-4 tbsp olive oil 
  • Red pepper flakes, to taste
  • Sea salt and pepper to taste
  • Gluten free pizza crust 
  • 1/2 cup dairy free shredded cheese


  1. Preheat oven to instructions indicated on frozen pizza dough. 
  2. Bring 2 quarts of water to a boil with a little salt hen add in rapini and cook for about 3 minutes. 
  3. Strain, reserving about 1 cup of the water. 
  4. Chop rapini into bite size pieces.
  5. Heat sauté pan with olive oil and add in garlic and cook until golden brown. 
  6. Add in rapini with reserved water, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper then let simmer. 
  7. Top pizza crust with cheese and garlic rapini. 
  8. Cook until crust is brown and cheese is melted. 
  9. Remove from oven, cut into slices then serve and enjoy!

I love Rapini Pizza. Lazy summer evenings call for no-fuss meals that can be pulled together as fast as you can drink a cocktail on the patio. Pizza is the answer, of course, just as it’s the answer for many a time-crunched dinner hour.
