Healthy Gluten Free Snacks That Are Actually Perfect For Runners
When it comes to snacks, moms and runners are pretty much experts. Moms, of course, have to keep snacks on them at all times. Not only for their perpetually hungry little offspring but also for themselves because (let’s be real) snacks usually become some sort of meal substitute during their busy lives.
Runners, on the other hand, are also busy but also always HANGRY. Meaning that they’ve probably eat breakfast, a second breakfast, a snack, lunch, snack and then dinner followed by….a snack.
Being that I’m a runner AND a mom, I’m pretty much a snack guru at this point. Not only am I ALWAYS busy but I am ALWAYS hangry so having something that is portable, healthy, satisfying AND gluten free is essential.
Over the last several years I have tried and tested more snacks than I can possibly recall but I do have my favorites that I keep my pantry stocked with and for that to happen, they have to meet certain criteria.
One, they obviously need to be gluten free. Two, they have to be free of any added crap including sugars. Three, they also need to be dairy free, soy free and have some sort of protein. Oh and they have to taste good (DUH) and help me refuel while I’m on the run (figuratively, not literally).
While not many have made the cut, here are the ones that I never leave home without.
If you aren’t familiar with the RXBAR then do yourself a favor and give it a try. They’re a whole food protein bar that literally contains what is says on the label and no other BS – which it also says on the label.
I was fortunate enough to have a bunch sent back to me over the summer and instantly fell in love. They come in a variety of flavors including Peanut Butter, Mixed Berry, Coffee Chocolate and Chocolate Sea Salt just to name a few. They also have seasonal flavors which happens to be Gingerbread right now since it’s the ~most wonderful time of the year~.
Health Warrior Bars
Another one of my favorites are Health Warrior Bars. They come in different varieties which include chia, protein and pumpkin seed. My obsession originally started with the “mini but mighty” chia seed bar which is a little snack bar packed with Omega-3, and 3-4 grams of protein but only 4-5 grams of sugar.
If you’re looking for something a bit more substantial then the pumpkin seed bars (which come in flavors like Dark Chocolate, Honey Cracked Pepper and Cinnamon Spice) are packed with a little more protein (around 8 grams) but still not a lot of sugar (only 6 grams or so).
If hunger hits and you really want some extra protein then the protein bars are where it’s at. They have 11 grams of protein (but still just 7 grams of sugar) and come in flavors like Honey Almond, Dark Chocolate Coconut Sea Salt and Mint Chocolate just to name a few.
Gluten Free Bites
One of my other absolute favorite snacks are Gluten Free Bites…otherwise known as the GFB.
As the company slogan says, “you don’t need to be gluten free to enjoy the GFB”. These little bites are pretty magical not to mention that they’re made with simple, non-GMO ingredients.
The goal of the GFB, which was started by two brothers who “don’t do well with gluten” is to “make stuff that tastes really good and is actually good for you”. As someone who is gluten free and likes yummy food – I can attest that they have done just that.
While I could eat the entire bag, I am usually pretty satisfied in just about 2 bites – which also happens to be their serving size. Those two bites contain around 4 grams of protein and 6 grams of sugar not to mention a mouthful of deliciousness.
Their bites come in a variety of flavors including Chocolate Cherry Almond (pictured above and their most popular), Dark Chocolate Hazelnut, Dark Chocolate Coconut, Coconut Cashew Crunch, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter, and PB & J. My favorites happen to be the Chocolate Cherry Almond and Dark Chocolate Hazelnut (YUM).
I often find these little nuggets of GFB noms at TJ Maxx but you can also order them off their website and even customize your Bites Case at a 10% discount.
Aside from Bites, the company also makes Gluten Free Bars (which come in six different flavors) and Gluten Free Power Breakfast (which come in a variety of five flavors) both of which are also vegan and soy free. I have yet to try either of those but if they are anything like their GFB Bites then I can pretty much assure you that they’re equally as yummy.
