Whether we like it our not, I think winter might officially be here to stay.  Mother Nature teased us for a while with unseasonably warm weather even up until last week when it was in the 50’s here.

Then, all of the sudden the wind howled, the temperatures dropped and snow was bestowed upon us from the sky.  Granted, it is still WAY milder than it was last winter so I’m not complaining but even so, it’s cold enough that dressing properly is important including your feet.  Because really, how much fun is running in the cold when your feet feel like frozen little sausages?

So, here are some ways to keep your tootsies warm during the next few months!

How To Keep Your Feet Warm During Cold Weather Winter Runs #fitfluential

1. COLD WEATHER SHOES

First and foremost, wearing shoes that are made for the weather will make a world of difference.  While there are some shoes like those from Salomon  that are specifically made for winter weather running, you can also wear shoes that are made of more rubber than mesh which will also keep the snow and slush out.  YakTrax are also an easy way to upgrade your shoes so that they are winter running ready which provide both traction and an a little extra layer of rubber on the front.

2. USE HAND WARMERS

I am a huge fan of hand warmers and not just for my fingers- they work great for your toes too! Just give them a shake to activate and place them on the tops of your toes inside of your shoes to keep your feet warm while you pound the pavement.

3.  WEAR A HAT

But, wait….aren’t we supposed to be keeping our toes warm? YES! We lose heat through our heads and hats keep our heads warm so it’s a no brainer (haha, get it? I’m so funny).  Seriously though, wearing a hat will help keep you warm from head to toe so you’re not shivering all over the place while you’re attempting to trot down the road.

4. WEAR WOOL SOCKS

Much like wearing shoes that are winter appropriate, wearing socks that are made to keep your feet warm are important too but just any kind of fabric won’t do.  Regardless of if you’re running during the summer or winter, skipping cotton is always a must and while wearing thin dry wicking socks during the summer is an obvious choice, clearly they are not appropriate for winter.  Wool, specifically Merino Wool provides just the kind of moisture management that you need while on the run!

Where to find such socks, you ask? Well there are a variety of places you can purchase Merino Wool running socks but most of them are ankle socks.  BrightLife Go, on the other hand, has Merino Wool compression socks that are knee height- perfect for keeping your toes AND legs warm!

Well aren't these fun! I would probably just wear them around the house (for obvious reasons). But they would also be awesome because I can only really wear my Nike Free's, which have no insulation AT ALL

If you can find them, the hot hands people sell insoles for your shoes that will warm your feet on long runs. I used to buy them for my son's football games. They work great.

I keep my feet warm with wool socks, and not running outside! ;) My husband is a big outdoor runner in sub zero temps and I think it's crazy. He even has shoes he uses just for it as he puts nails in the bottom because I guess it works better and he likes them than the grips. I wouldn't know because again I'm not a cold weather runner.
I'm hoping to run more this year and my indoor bike isn't cutting it for the winter so I'm debating on a treadmill, which he hates them so I'm hoping I will like it.

I honestly don't hate the treadmill- I actually kinda enjoy it. That being said, I do like running outside (maybe not subzero) but once you get out there, it's not that bad! Hope you have good luck with the 'mill! ;)

They are worth investing in even if they are just to warm up your toes after a run and help recover, I think! Plus you can kinda get away wearing a lot of their styles both casually and to work!
