Immune Boosting Tips for Cold Season {+ Giveaway}

It’s that time of the year again.  No, I’m not referring to the holidays, I’m talking about cold and flu season.  Ew. 

Without fail, every fall I get sick.  Sore throat, stuffy nose, cough…ya know, the works.  It has gotten even worse since becoming a mom but that’s just the nature of the job.  You cuddle to cure their colds all while getting sneezed and coughed on in the process making avoiding the germs nearly impossible.  

While shielding yourself entirely from the germs might not be realistic, there are some things that you can do to help boost your immune system and hopefully give your body some ammo to fight back. 

That is exactly what I have been doing this fall and I have to say that while I did come down with a cold recently, I was able to fight it off rather quickly with the help of these few simple tips:

Get enough sleep. 

Sleep.  Yes, harder said than done but sleep really is essential for our immune system to function properly.  Sleep deprivation can really do a number on our immune system.  It leads to stress which then impairs the ability of the immune system to fight off infection the way it’s supposed to.  Getting a good 6-8 hours of sleep a day really does the immune system a world of good! 😉 


Okay, sometimes fitting in exercise requires cutting back on the Zzz’s but if you can find a way to fit in it, even if it’s just for 20 minutes a day while still logging enough hours of satisfactory sleep then exercise is another great way to keep your immune system happy.  

Skip the booze. 

Not trying to be a party pooper here but if you really want your immune system to function properly then cutting back on the booze is a good idea.  I know, I am all for a glass of wine or two but when you’re up against all the germs that are going around, limiting alcohol consumption is really the way to go if you want to stay healthy. 

Eat your fruits and veggies. 

Getting your daily serving of fruits and veggies is an obvious suggestion but not always the easiest thing to do.  One way to ensure that you incorporate them into your diet is with an immune boosting smoothie.  

Melon Zinger Immune Boosting Smoothie with cantaloupe, kale, hemp seeds and ginger


This recipe is one that might seem a little odd given the combination of cantaloupe and kale but they both are rich in Vitamin C which helps to shorten the length and severity of cold symptoms. It is also low histamine approved and adapted from a low histamine smoothie eBook that I downloaded a few months ago.  



Adapted from Super Nutrient Smoothies 


  • 1 cup diced cantaloupe 
  • 1/2 cup chopped kale 
  • 1 cup water 
  • 2 tsp hemp seeds
  • 2 inches fresh grated ginger 



  1. Combine all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.  
  2. Top with additional hemp seeds and enjoy! 

Take your vitamins.

Great tips! I want to try that combination smoothie. I love kale and cantaloupe but never thought of putting those two together. I think I am coming down with something, I woke up this morning feeling the dreaded cold. Both my germ infested kids have been sick. So hurrah for me! :)

These are great tips! I would add maintaining vitamin D levels. They are SO important to immune function and tend to drop in the winter months.

I need this in my life! With the remodel and everything going on things are crazy and I'm clearly not getting my ZZZ's, I'm stressed, the kitchen has been torn apart (now back together for the most part for a week and a half and then we have to be out of there for a full week for the flooring) so eating well.... and my body has been holding on to a cold for weeks and this is just not normal for me. Definitely need to make this!

getting enough fruit & veggies is probably the easiest one to do and the most important! i love everything about that smoothie, especially the cantaloupe and the ginger. i'm definitely going to sub my morning smoothies for this one

So many great tips! With a toddler and a hubby that works at a local high school, we need all the immune boosting support we can get! I love the sound of this smoothie! I've never used cantaloupe in a smoothie before!

These are all awesome tips. Definitely limit alcohol. I know people think it doesn't affect health but it does! Even just a glass or two can really inhibit immunity as well as sports performance! Awesome recipe, btw... yum :)

I LOVE these vitamins! Helps me get rid of my sweet craving :) I've been using essential oils during cold and flu season and they really seem to help us!
