Miles for Meals 5k Recap

Today I participated in the Miles for Meals 5k at Onondaga Lake Park in Syracuse that benefited the Food Bank of CNY along with a running friend I met at the NEDA walk last month!   The event helps to raise funds to provide nutritious food throughout the local 11 county service area.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day for the race, 70 degrees with a light breeze and a beautiful view of the lake.  If you’re not familiar with Onondaga Lake Park, it is a very scenic and serene area right outside of Syracuse that boasts running and biking trails all along the shore.

To add to the fun, one of the Miles for Meals coordinators was even dressed up as a banana to direct participants to the registration booth….he was also gracious enough to let me take a picture of him…thanks Mr. Banana Man!

Even though all the conditions were perfect for the best 5k race ever, that is not how it went, unfortunately.  There was a bit of confusion as far as directions to the actual park, which made my friend and I a bit tardy for the party.  To add the that, I had to pee like no one’s business and had about 30 seconds to do it before the gun when off.  Needless to say, we started the race a bit late and got stuck in the back of the pack (like, no where near the starting line) which made for some pacing and timing issues.

The race course ran parallel to the lake, was relatively flat and we turned around at the half way point to go back toward the finish.  As you can see from what Map My Fitness calculated, we were almost 2/10ths of a mile behind the rest of the racing group when we began…we really were late to the start! To make up for it though, the scenery was gorgeous as we ran along and we even got to wave “hi” to Mr. Banana Man as he passed fully dressed in his bright yellow suit.  I give him huge props for this because anytime it is above 60 degrees when I run I think it is scorching hot and I wanna die.

I am not sure of our official finishing time ( I know it was under 30 minutes) but regardless, we had fun and enjoyed meeting up for a run together.  I rarely get the chance to run with anyone else and really enjoyed having  some company. Here is our finish photo…she looks great but of course I am ruining it with a big cheese grin…

Since I go it alone most days for my run, this was fun to experience with a friend, not to mention we had pretty views to look at the entire time! Unfortunately, she leaves the area to embark on more exciting adventures soon so I won’t be able to meet her for races too much longer.  I am hoping there are one or two more we can sign up for before she leaves!

Overall, I wish I had taken more pictures of the route we ran so that I could share it with you (seriously, the course was gorgeous) and I wish I had peed about 5 minutes sooner- oops! Oh well, it wont be the last race I run so there is always next time :)

Did you run any races this weekend? How did it go?
