This past Sunday I participated in my first ever Saint Nick/Santa Shuffle! Actually, the day wasn’t just a first for me, my 4 year old daughter also participated in her first ever race so it was a really exciting day for us both!
The event was put on by InStride Sports and was also the inaugural year for the Saint Nick Shuffle in Syracuse! I honestly have nothing but great things to say about this event. It was held at the Onondaga Community College at the SRC Arena complete with an indoor track for the kiddos race and an outdoor loop for the 5k!
We arrived at the arena only to be greeted by Santa HIMSELF! OMG I KNOW HIM!
They had a little “North Pole” set up – my kids had a blast sitting on his lap, sharing their wish list and scampering off with a candy cane afterward.
After the meet and greet with santa, I gave my daughter a little pep talk to prepare her for her first ever race. Since she is only 4 she was registered to participate in the 200 meter dash, just once around the indoor track but far enough for her little legs that I wasn’t sure if she would run the entire length of the track or not.
We did a little warm up lap once around just to show her what she had to do. Not long after at 9 AM she was called lined up at the starting line of the track with all the other littles for their mini shuffle!
To my surprise not only did she run the entire way around the track but she managed to finish 4th out of the 12 kids or so!
She honestly ran her little heart out and even got a real medal for all of her efforts plus a cookie! In fact, she was so into it that she ran around the track SIX MORE TIMES after she was done. Poor kid wanted to know why she woke up with sore quads the next day…haha!
Anyway, about an hour later at 10 AM the 5k runners were ushered outside for to the start. Since I live in NY and it’s December I really expected it to be either snowing and cold or snowing and freezing so I planned to dress for the occasion.
It was neither cold or snowing, it was actually an unseasonable 50 something degrees out…I may have looked festive but as soon as I stepped outside I knew I was going to be sweating bullets.
Once we got out there I lined up with part of my trusty Ragnar Adirondacks 2015 crew and waited for the gun to sound.
Within seconds after our selfie the starting gun sounded and we were off!
Other than my santa hat floppin’ around in my eyes I started pretty strong. The course itself was a 2x loop around the 1.5 mile road around the arena which sounds easy but given the LOOONG hill at the half mile mark, it was quite the challenge.
I honestly didn’t start the race with the intention of really racing it but my legs felt better than they had in a long time. Aside from the one hill that we had to run TWICE, the course was fairly easy and forgiving. I was able to keep a pretty steady pace and managed to finish in 23:24! Not a PR but one of my faster 5k’s so no complaints here!
Following the race, I collected my finishers medal and made my way inside to my family who had been patiently waiting while coloring and collecting more candy canes from various vendors.
After begging and pleading I finally got my daughter to take a picture with me!
We obviously had to show off the fact that we had matching finisher medals! How awesome are they?
Besides the bling runners were also treated to a full breakfast, a t shirt, santa hat as well as live entertainment and of course, photo ops with Santa himself.
Overall, I was beyond impressed by this little local race considering that it was it’s first year. My daughter had so much fun she asked when she could sign up for another one- I may have created a mini monster!
Needless to say, we will definitely be back again next year!
