Stay Healthy While Traveling with SmartyPants!
Later today I’ll be leaving town, heading to race the Ragnar Relay Adirondacks. For those of you that don’t know, it’s a 200 mile relay adventure from Saratoga Springs, NY to Lake Placid, NY. It involves a lot of close quarters (aka packed like sardines in a van), a lot of running and not a whole lot of sleep. You can see how this might be problematic for the immune system and healthy goals. Honestly, the running part will be the easy part of my adventure so in order to stay on track, I follow these 5 simple tips to keep myself in tip-top shape!
5 Ways To Stay Healthy While Traveling
1. Find time to sweat.
Staying active while traveling is important to keeping the immune system on track and in check. Plus it makes you feel good (hello, endorphins) and feeling good leads to feeling healthy and fit! Clearly I will have this covered on my adventure (and then some) but typically I make the time to workout while traveling in order to stay on track.
2. Make healthy food choices.
Seems like an obvious (though not always easy) thing to do but making healthy food choices while traveling is important. Yes, it might take a little more planning but it’s totally worth it. Pack snacks in advance instead of relying on a gas station or fast food and if you happen to run out of your supply, be prepared by knowing what healthy choices are in close proximity. I plan to bring a bunch of easily portable/allergy friendly snacks with me for Ragnar….nobody wants to see me when I get rungry! 😛
3. Wash em, wash em, wash em.
Wash your hands, that is. Seriously, this time of year is THE WORST when it comes to colds and getting sick. Add a bunch of people along with some colds in close proximity while traveling and you’ve got a straight up germ fest. In my case, it will be 7 people packed like sardines tightly in a van sharing germs with every breath we take. Since sinks aren’t readily available, hand sanitizer will be my new best friend.
4. Get some sleep.
Sleep deprivation equals compromised immune system. While it might be challenging, staying on the same sleep schedule helps to keep your body on track and well rested. Obviously in my case with the relay, sleep really won’t be too much of an option since I will be running in the middle of the night. Thankfully, I’m bringing some backup to keep my immune system in check. Which brings me to tip #5….
5. Don’t forget your vitamins.
I’ll be honest, I’m a bad vitamin taker let alone remembering to pack them for vacation. Thankfully, a company called SmartyPants not only makes you WANT to take your vitamins but also makes it super easy to bring them on-the-go.
First things first, these little all-in-one vitamin gummies are DELICIOUS. Are they candy? Are they good for me? Hard to tell by the taste but the packaging tells me otherwise.
What they’re made of:
- A Full Mutivitamin
- Omega 3S EPA + DHA
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin B12
- Soluble Fiber
What they don’t have:
- High Fructose Corn Syrup
- Artificial Flavors
- Artificial Sweeteners
- Artificial Colors
They are also gluten free, contain only natural sweeteners and are lab tested by a 3rd party!
So as it turns out, these vitamin gummies may look and taste like gumdrops but they are, in fact, way healthier than candy that you’d find at a concession stand.
