Tried it Tuesday: Exo Protein Bars + Cosmos Creations

Howdy ya’ll! I’m hopping on the “Tried It Tuesday” train to share with you some of the things I’ve been trying but haven’t exactly had a lot of time to talk about.

Thanks to the lovely Lakeshore Runner for hosting this fun linkup!

So just because these things haven’t made an appearance on the blog doesn’t until today mean that they aren’t worth a mention.  In fact, I have been dying to share about each of them and this format is the perfect way to do it; I get to share what I’ve tried and you get to hear about products that might interest you! #WINNING!

Let’s not waste any time getting down and dirty.

First up, Exo Bars

Exo Bars

Exo Bars or more commonly referred to as Cricket Flour Bars (by me, that is) are made with, well, ground up crickets.  “BUT WHY?!” you ask?

According to their fact sheet, crickets are a “complete protein source, containing all essential amino acids” and they also “contain 2.2x more iron than spinach”.

With every bite you eat 5 crickets and 40 crickets per bar.  They are also gluten, soy, dairy, grain free and Paleo friendly.

Most importantly, they also are an environmentally friendly source of protein since they produce less greenhouse gases and require less water.

BUT HOW DO THEY TASTE? Is really the most important question.

Exo Bars

I tried a bite, then another and I have to say, I am more pleased than I thought I’d be. If I had no idea that there were insects, I would just assume it was a cocoa flavored health food bar.

Out of the flavors they offer (Cocoa Nut, Blueberry Vanilla, Apple Cinnamon and Peanut Butter and Jelly), I have to say that Cocoa Nut is probably my favorite.  Cocoa is always my favorite though, so if you’re a PB & J fan, you might prefer the PB & J bar.

On the flip side, Cosmos Creations Premium Puffed Corn

A featured item in June’s Love with Food Box (read my review of a previous month’s box here), Cosmos is a gluten free and non- GMO uses all natural ingredients to create artisan puffed corn snacks.

While Cosmos Creations has eight flavors available (Cheddar & Pepper, Sea Salt & Vinegar, Sea Salt & Butter, SRIRACHA, Coconut Crunch, Caramel and Salted Caramel), and are trans-fat free and also free of kernels and hulls which makes them the perfect popped snack…hooray for corn pieces not getting stuck in your teeth! :)

I was given the opportunity to try out two flavors, Coconut Crunch and Salted Caramel.

I put a bunch of house guests to work and make them taste test them both (hard job, I know). The verdict?

Coconut Crunch was the winner BUT everyone agreed that the Salted Caramel tasted a lot like Captain Crunch cereal and when both combined, they tasted like heaven! 😉
