Try This Thursday: Sunwarrior Proteins + Greens Review


As most of you know, I’m all about protein powder and am always up for trying something new.  I put it in my smoothies, mix it in my oatmeal and bake with it whenever I get the chance.

While I have tried some lactose free whey here and there, I prefer vegan protein since I tend to digest it easier.  So, when I was recently given the opportunity to review Sunwarrior proteins and greens, I jumped at the chance to give it a try!

I received product samples as part of a campaign through Hawke Influence, as always, all opinions are my own. 

Full disclosure: I have actually tried Sunwarrior protein before but it was probably about 5 years ago and my taste buds weren’t as well versed in vegan protein as they are now.

Since then, I believe they have changed their formula and improved the taste.  I only say this because the label on their Warrior Blend protein actually says “Improved Taste” so I was excited to try it again and see if I could recall any difference.

I was actually sent a number of samples to try from the Sunwarrior line including: Warrior Blend Protein in both Vanilla & Chocolate, Classic Sprouted and Fermented Protein in both Vanilla & Chocolate, Ormus Supergreens in Natural & Peppermint, Activated Barley Powder as well as Liquid Vitamin Minerals and Fulvic Acid

For the purposes of this review, I am going to focus on the Warrior Blend Raw Vegan Protein and the Ormus Supergreens.  Both are gluten free, soy free, dairy free and hypoallergenic. 

WARRIOR BLEND RAW VEGAN PROTEIN

Warrior Blend Raw Vegan Protein

 

Sunwarrior’s Warrior Blend protein is a blend of raw protein (organic and raw pea, cranberry and hemp) sources which when combined create a raw plant based protein powder and contains all essential amino acids.  

The protein powder also contains Coconut MCT (Medium Chain Triglycerides) which require less energy to break down for digestion and allows fat to be burned as energy.  The Warrior Blend is also free of solvents, GMOs, and artificial flavors, colors and preservatives.

It comes in three flavors: Vanilla, Chocolate and Natural.  I was sent both the Vanilla and Chocolate to try and used them both in the recipes below.  

Before getting into the recipes, let’s break it down: 

Taste: I tried both mixed with only water. The chocolate tastes very chocolatey with some added sweetness.  The vanilla also tastes a lot like vanilla with a hint of sweetness though I prefer the chocolate.  I always prefer chocolate though so that isn’t saying much. 

Texture: Both the chocolate and vanilla blend extremely well with just a shaker bottle.  The mix is not gritty, chalky or chunky.  I was actually impressed with how smooth it blended- I have tried several other vegan protein powders that do not shake nearly as well. 

Cost: $29.97 for 1.1 lb tub – middle of the road price compared to other vegan protein powders.  

ORMUS SUPERGREENS 

Sunwarrior Ormus Supergreens. Dairy Free, Vegan, Gluten Free, Soy Free.

Sunwarrior’s Ormus Supergreens include “potent nutrition from alfalfa, barley grass, wheat grass, spinach, oat grass, parsley, moringa, and ginger” which are grown in volcanic and mineral rich soils which enriches the plants with trace minerals. 

These greens are raw and alive since they are made using a cold drying process which preserves and protects the bio-active components. 

Sunwarrior’s Ormus Supergreens also contain probiotics which helps to aid in the digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Taste: I only tried the natural greens since I can’t really stomach anything peppermint.  Since these are really just cold pressed, raw greens they tasted a lot like, greens. They also smell a lot like greens too.  The suggested use is to mix with water but I suggest it be mixed into a smoothie. 

Texture: I didn’t try them alone (just in a smoothie) but they mixed very well and didn’t make it gritty or chunky at all.

Cost: $35.95 for 8oz (.5lbs) for the Natural flavor which is slightly more expensive than comparable greens on the market. 

Obviously I couldn’t just taste test them, I had to create some recipes as well- one for each protein powder.  Nothing complicated or extremely creative but just something simple to show you ways to take it up a notch. 

SUPER CHOCOLATE BLUEBERRY SMOOTHIE

Sunwarrior Super Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie. Gluten Free, Soy Free, Vegan

 

Ingredients: 

  • 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 packet of Warrior Blend Chocolate Protein Powder
  • 1 packet Sunwarrior Ormus Greens, Natural Flavor
  • Cacao nibs, optional 
  • Bee pollen, optional 

 

Instructions: 

  1. Combine milk, blueberries, protein powder and greens in a blender. 
  2. Blend until smooth and pour into 8 ounce glass. 
  3. Top with cacao nibs and bee pollen for a pop of color and added nutrients. 
  4. Enjoy! 

STRAWBERRY VANILLA ALMOND PROTEIN OATMEAL

Sunwarrior Strawberry Vanilla Almond Protein Oatmeal. Dairy Free, Soy Free, Gluten Free, Vegan

 

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup certified gluten free quick oats
  • 1 packet Sunwarrior Vanilla Warrior Blend 
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk 
  • 2 tbsp almond butter
  • 1 tbsp sliced almonds
  • 2 large strawberries, sliced 

 

Directions:

  1. In a medium bowl, mix oats, protein powder and almond milk together.  
  2. Microwave for approximately 3 minutes then let stand for another minute or two. 
  3. Top with almond butter and strawberries then sprinkle sliced almonds on top. 
  4. Enjoy! :)
