Virtual Run Fun & A Special #SweatPink Discount

Just a few weeks ago I participated in my first virtual run.  Since I am fairly new to running, I really hadn’t considered virtual runs but when I read a few other blog posts mentioning them as a way to give to charity and earn a fun medal in the process, I was intrigued!

After checking out a few reputable virtual running race sites I chose to sign up for a Home Run 5k through Jost Running which benefits Camp Promise which is an overnight summer camp for kids, teens and adults with muscular dystrophy.

 As with most virtual races I was sent a bib to print out, then all I had to do was pick a day between August 1st- August 31st and run a 5k at a time of my choosing wherever I wanted! I completed this virtual race on Monday the 18th and since I was feeling competitive with myself I ran as fast as I could on my regular Monday route and PR’d with a time of 23:49! While I am not going to actually count this as a true PR- I do at least feel like I earned my medal that was sent to me!Virtual Run Fun & #SweatPink Discount

After winning a race against myself, I got the virtual run bug and started to explore to see what other races I could sign up for and complete during my regular training runs. Through various blogs and in an email I received from Fit Approach (Sweat Pink), I was made aware of the #10on10 10k or 10 mile virtual run to celebrate Skirt Sports 10 year anniversary! #10on10 Virtual RunYou can pick your distance and run it on either the 13th, 14th or 15th of September and every registration includes a gift certificate between $50-$250 plus a finishers gift! I chose to pick the $85 package and was immediately mailed a gift certificate where I picked out this fun sports bra and this pink flip belt! :)

Another fun race for a great cause that I came across was the Virtual Pug Run 5k/10k & 1 Miler!  This was crated by Shannyn from Frugal Beautiful in an effort to raise funds to benefit the Northern Illinois Pug Rescue.  Her goal is to raise enough money to save 26.2 pugs (a donation of $7,860) in honor of her groom-to-be running the Chicago Marathon.

The-Virtual-Pug-Run When you sign up and complete your pledged distance you receive this sweet Pugicorn medal! I literally didn’t hesitate a minute to sign up for this race.  Not only do I think the medal is pretty awesome but I am also a Mom of two little pug monsters, so participating in an event that will help save some of their furry friends was a no brainer!

Speaking of saving animals, there is one more virtual race that I was invited to sign up for by #VegRunChat! The 2014 Virtual Race to Save the Animals is being hosted by VegRunChat in an effort to bring awareness to the ongoing abuse and maltreatment of animals with all proceeds being donated to an animal sanctuary called SASHA Farm.

The race is being held between October 1st and 15th and distance choices to choose from are 5k, half marathon & marathon with all finishers receiving this awesome medal and some fun swag. Those who place in the top of the finishing results also win some fun prizes from the race sponsors too! I am definitely singing up for this race but I still haven’t decided between the 5k or the half marathon distance.

Whatever distance I do end up running, with the addition of these virtual races to my regular race schedule I will have 11 under my belt by the end of the year. While I never officially became involved in Jill Coyners’ 14 in 2014, I would love to find 3 more either virtual or traditional races just to accomplish it as a personal goal!

My goodness, congrats, I think it counts as a PR :) Talk about being a motivated mama! I don't think I could do a virtual run, I need others around to motivate me to MOVE IT, plus I still can't run! The pug run seems so cute :) I say you run whatever distance makes you feel happiest :)

    Aw thank you, Amber! I am just a naturally competitive person so I tend to push myself alot! The pug run should be fun, I love that it is for such a good cause with a fun story behind it!

I am running the 10on10 too! I think they are great fun to add to the training schedule! I haven't seen the couple of others that you are doing but they look fun too! See you in Sept! I will be running virtually beside you ! :)

The half! The half!!! :D
I like virtual races. I've done two in the past and especially around here where races are slim pickings when it gets cold outside, they can be a fun goal to work toward. Plus I like the swag. :)

I was doing Jill's 14 in '14 this year and actually just hit my 14th race the other weekend! Crazy!

I vote for the half as well. :) I just signed up for the #10on10 race too! I haven't done a virtual race before but I'm really excited to see how it goes. Glad to know that I'll have a running buddy!

Virtual races are fun! The only races I have done around town did not have finisher medals so the ones I do have are from virtuals. I love 80's movies, well, all things 80's, so I am a sucker for Virtual Nerd Runs. All their races are movie and music themed. Top Gun, Star Wars, MJ Thriller, Goonies.... I've done a few of those and once did a virtual treadmill run with my sister. Good luck with your races!

That's awesome!! I would count that as a PR in my books ;) So do you actually get real medals sent in the mail?? I've never done a virtual run, but I am a huge fan of medals (basically the only reason I run haha) so I may have to look into these...

Love that you won the "race against yourself"--after all, isn't that what they all are?? Or at least, they should be! I think that is why I don't really race all that much--when i do, I want it to be a big freaking deal, otherwise, give me a medal every time that I go out, lol. I have only run one other virtual race, which was for Sandy Hook (right after the tragedy). I totally just signed up for the pug run, though :D

I have never ran a virtual race yet. I was first going to say so for the half, but a 5K would be great to substitute a speed/interval workout. These workouts are my least favorite, so doing a virtual run would be a good way to actually look forward to your workout if you dislike speed workouts like I do.

    That's true! I actually don't mind speed work but I elected to sign up for the half as a "practice" for my half that I am signed up for in Nov! Virtual races would definitely be a fun way to incorporate speed work though, like you said!
