What Empowerment Means to Me

I touched on this just briefly on my Instagram post for International Women’s Day. I feel very strongly that when women empower other women they not only help them achieve their goals but they also become stronger themselves. For you to really understand why I’m so passionate about this, let me first give you a little background about myself.

In my life before becoming a wife and stay at home mom, I worked several years as an advocate for victims of violence. Specifically, I advocated on behalf of domestic violence victims and sexual assault survivors. My only job wasn’t just to advocate for my clients though, it was also to empower them. In this capacity, empowerment meant showing them the tools they could use to make their own decisions and in turn become stronger.  If I had simply just advocated for my clients, without educating them and giving them the tools they needed to make decisions then I wouldn’t really have been helping them.  Every time that I helped someone and empowered them they became stronger and I became a better advocate.

So what does this have to do with fitness and living a healthy lifestyle? Just in the same way that a person in an abusive relationship knows that they want to leave but need the tools to do so; a person who wants to become fit and active also needs the tools to make it happen.  It’s one thing to have motivation (which is really important) but if you don’t have the knowledge or access to information and a plan then you probably won’t be getting anywhere very fast.

Maybe I just have this inherent desire to help people but I really feel that knowledge is power and that those of us who have learned the tools that are necessary to succeed should be sharing it with others who haven’t been shown them yet.  That is one of the reasons why I started my fitness Instagram account and this blog (other than wanting to connect with others and making friends).  I also hope to get my personal training certification in the near future so that I can take my knowledge and love for fitness even further.

As sad and heartbreaking as my previous job was, the thing I loved most about it was helping other people through what they once thought was impossible.  I would love to do the same by helping people achieve their fitness goals. While I have a pretty good grasp on it now and have been able to achieve my personal goals, I have so much more to learn in order to really help others in a professional manner.  For the time being though, I want to continue to encourage others and share the knowledge that I do have.  Empowering others not only helps them to become stronger, it helps me to become a stronger and better person as well.

I’m not sure how much sense I made while trying to explain my reasoning for feeling so passionately about empowering others but the moral of the story is that we can all help each other.

We should encourage each other, lift each other up and inspire each other to become the best possible versions of ourselves.  Support each other through the bad days and celebrate each other’s accomplishments…no matter how small.  Share what we know proves to be successful but leave judgement out of it while we do so.
