10 Ways to Celebrate National Running Day!

Happy National Running Day!!! For the last several years, the first Wednesday in June has been a day for the running community to unite and celebrate their love of running! 

Last year was my first year participating and celebrating which I did by waking up at the crack of dawn with the goal of running my longest distance to date.  I accomplished that goal by running 9 miles and recapping each wonderful mile with a post on the blog. 

Now, looking back it’s fun to see how far I’ve come.  I’ve since completed 2 half marathons and am currently training for my first full.  Rereading that post also inspired me to come up with more fun ways to celebrate National Running Day! 

1. Run + pledge your miles! 

Charity Miles National Running Day

By simply downloading the Charity Miles App and tracking your run, you will be able to donate to a charity of your choice with every mile that is logged! Charities include: Autism Speaks, Stand Up to Cancer, Team Challenge, Girls on the Run, Team RWB and several more!

2. Participate in a virtual race or run. 

National Running Day Virtual Race

US Road Running is hosting a 5K, 10K and half marathon in honor of National Running Day! Just register, run and post your result! :) Alternatively, if you head on over to Running Day’s Facebook page you can find event to join for a group run in your city.  

3. Set a new goal or add a race to your calendar!

Setting and working toward a new goal can be quite rewarding.  It can be as simple as running further than you’ve ran, something more aggressive like coming up with a plan to PR or even signing up for that big race you’ve been too scared to run. 

4. Buy new running shoes.

I don’t know about you but using National Running Day to buy a new pair of kicks sounds like a good excuse to me! 😉 Come to think of it, I purchased my last pair in January and it’s now June….thinkin’ mama needs a new pair of Sauconys! 

5. Make a post-run treat!

6. Run a new route.

It’s easy to get stuck in the same old rut with your running route.  Change it up; smell new flowers, see new sites and fall in love with running all over again. 

7. Create a new playlist. 


Reinvigorate your run with some new tunes! Sometimes, it’s fun to look forward to listening to new songs on your run and get your groove on while your movin’! The running playlist above is one that I created last Spring- more old school than new school but you can never go wrong with some throwback jams, right?! :)

8. Run with a friend!


I’m pretty notorious for running solo mostly because I live in the middle of nowhere and run before the world is awake but over the last year, some of my most enjoyable runs have been with friends.  Solo sessions can be great, even therapeutic but running with friends is a great way to make runs just that much more special. 


9. Post your run on social media.

Celebrated #NationalRunningDay with a run?! Post it to social media to say Happy National Running Day! This is the picture I posted to IG last year after my 9 mile run.  I was excited and proud to have set a goal and made it happen- of course I had to share! 😉

Ditch all your gadgets, lace up, head out the door and just run. Not for time or for distance but just for the love of running.  Isn’t that what National Running Day is all about anyway?! :)
