TICKRx + Wahoo 7 Minute Workout

One of my favorite ways to get in a quick and effective workout is through HIIT  or high intensity interval training.   HIIT,  is an exercise strategy which alternates periods of short intense exercises with recovery periods.  This type of training has scientifically proven to give you maximum benefits in a shorter amount of time.

A specific study which was publish in the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health & Fitness Journal in recent years listed 12 exercises performed for 30 seconds with 10 seconds rest in between.  From start to finish the entire circuit takes about 7 minutes.

To really get the most out of your HIIT workout you need an interval timer and to really give your all when performing each rep of each exercise.  Ideally, a coach or trainer to count your reps and watch the clock for you would make that even easier but having someone to keep you accountable isn’t always possible….until now!

Wahoo Fitness TICKRx 7 Minute Workout App

Wahoo Fitness has created a fitness tracker called the TICKRx that not only monitors your workout intensity by gauging your heart rate but also uses advanced motion sensors to help you improve your form, measure cadence and optimize performance.  It even has internal memory so that you can use it without your smartphone and it will capture metrics such as: time, heart rate and calorie burn!

The TICKRx, which is worn around your chest, can be used for strength training, running, walking, cycling and specifically with the 7 Minute App which counts your reps as you go so that you can get the most out of your workout.

I completed the 7 minute workout twice and compared my results….

TICKRx Wahoo 7 Minute Workout App

I was impressed to discover that it really did count my reps as I went along and would even encourage me saying “you can do this” and congratulate me with “great job” if I got more reps in than the time before.

The only reps that seemed off were the step-ups which I choose to do one side then switch half way through to the other….thinking that had I alternated it would have counted correctly.

What really matters is that I got in an AWESOME workout in just 7 minutes, I was actually sweating and a little out of breath.  Had I not already worked out both of these days, I would have done multiple rounds for a real whooping! 😉

While the basic app is free, with a small upgrade ($1.99) you can also get features like a workout log, set exercise duration and rest time, perform multiple sets, randomize exercise order and even set a daily reminder.  It is available on iTunes and Google Play

TICKRx Wahoo Fitness

The TICKRx is available for purchase on WahooFitness.com for $99.99 which includes free shipping, no hassle returns, customer service and a 30 day money back guarantee.

Nice review! How do you feel about this thing strapped around your chest? I think this is the next way I need to go in my training but I have not decided on how yet. Great info!

    Reply May 27, 2015

Thanks! I actually don't mind it around my chest so much for short periods but I haven't tried running with it. I do like my strapless Mio for things like running. :)

What a great fitness tool. I love love HIIT! I workout for time so I don't have to routinely keep up with reps. The only time I count is to establish a baseline and monitor progress.

    Reply May 27, 2015

That's true! I tend to count even when I am doing it for time, just a habit I guess :)

Reply May 27, 2015

Very cool! I definitely love HIIT Workouts--what a great tool to monitor and track your progress!

    Reply May 27, 2015

It is pretty cool, I love playing around with new fitness tracking tools! I swear I worked harder trying to beat my count from the previous time!

Reply May 27, 2015

I love HIIT workouts it helps me make the most of very limited workout time with the twins!! and I have to admit I have this app but haven't used it :)

    Reply May 27, 2015

HIIT is great when you have to get in something quick. The app is a lot cooler with the tracker :)

Reply May 27, 2015

Awesome review! HIIT rocks! p.s. your website is beautiful!

It is fun that you mention losing count of reps. Once I was doing a WOD and forgot to count. But we were in pairs, so I hoped that my partner was better than me. Nope! I am one of those who needs to keep a piece of paper close by.
And totally off-topic, your site looks great!

I have been trying to add more wall sits in to my routines and they are killer. But, they are effective.

I love the seven minute workout, I remember laughing when the ladies on the morning news decides to try it out, they were dying. Also I love the redesign, it just popped up for me today! Interval training is a great way to blast calories on limited time.

I am dying to try out this wahoo thingy. I am terrible at keeping track of my reps. And I'm a data person, I love to see it written out in front of me! Is it me or did you change the layout of the blog?

Reply May 27, 2015

New to me, interesting! I love my old GymBoss for HIIT. The new blog updates look great!

    Reply May 27, 2015

Oh I do love my Gymboss but this was just fun because it's more interactive!

I do like hiit workouts too! I tried an early version of a wahoo tracker years ago but it was nothing like this one. Nice review.

    Reply May 27, 2015

Oh really?! This one is pretty neat, definitely worth checking out!

My coach throws HIIT into my marathon training mix, and I am amazed at how effective it is! I can't say I love it, but I love the results!

    Reply May 27, 2015

It is definitely more difficult than other kinds of workouts but super effective!

I have been using Wahoo Fitness HRM for a while now. I also downloaded this app but wasn't quite sure what to do with it. I do plan on trying the workouts. Never understood the TICKR concept until now. Great post.

Glad I could help ya figure it out! Definitely try the workout with the TICKRx, it's fun :)

Seems interesting but also like one more gadget that ends up sitting around. I do love HIIT workouts though.

True though this can function in multiple ways and if you like to use HRMs then it would come in pretty handy! :)

This sounds so cool! I always lose track of my reps, even if I'm counting out loud. It's kind of a problem....
Love the new blog design, BTW

I love the 7 minute workout! I do have a timing app, but I want to check out Wahoo.

This is my first time joining the link up (which I thank you for hosting). I think that the blog link for your co-hostess Amber may be wrong though. It seems to be a sex site :-0

    Reply May 27, 2015

Definitely check out Wahoo! Thanks so much for linking up and letting me know about Amber's link...she just changed her domain name and I hadn't updated it yet (oops) and some porn site must have picked her old one up...OH MY!

LOVING the new site layout and design!! I enjoy HIIT workouts, and definitely lose track of counting reps, esp. for my personal training clients. Safety cuing gets in the way of accurate counting, sometimes :P

    Reply May 28, 2015

Thanks!!! :) HIIT is awesome and yeah, I can see how as a trainer it would be easy to lose count of reps!
