One of my favorite ways to get in a quick and effective workout is through HIIT or high intensity interval training. HIIT, is an exercise strategy which alternates periods of short intense exercises with recovery periods. This type of training has scientifically proven to give you maximum benefits in a shorter amount of time.
A specific study which was publish in the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health & Fitness Journal in recent years listed 12 exercises performed for 30 seconds with 10 seconds rest in between. From start to finish the entire circuit takes about 7 minutes.
To really get the most out of your HIIT workout you need an interval timer and to really give your all when performing each rep of each exercise. Ideally, a coach or trainer to count your reps and watch the clock for you would make that even easier but having someone to keep you accountable isn’t always possible….until now!
Wahoo Fitness has created a fitness tracker called the TICKRx that not only monitors your workout intensity by gauging your heart rate but also uses advanced motion sensors to help you improve your form, measure cadence and optimize performance. It even has internal memory so that you can use it without your smartphone and it will capture metrics such as: time, heart rate and calorie burn!
The TICKRx, which is worn around your chest, can be used for strength training, running, walking, cycling and specifically with the 7 Minute App which counts your reps as you go so that you can get the most out of your workout.
I completed the 7 minute workout twice and compared my results….
I was impressed to discover that it really did count my reps as I went along and would even encourage me saying “you can do this” and congratulate me with “great job” if I got more reps in than the time before.
The only reps that seemed off were the step-ups which I choose to do one side then switch half way through to the other….thinking that had I alternated it would have counted correctly.
What really matters is that I got in an AWESOME workout in just 7 minutes, I was actually sweating and a little out of breath. Had I not already worked out both of these days, I would have done multiple rounds for a real whooping! 😉
While the basic app is free, with a small upgrade ($1.99) you can also get features like a workout log, set exercise duration and rest time, perform multiple sets, randomize exercise order and even set a daily reminder. It is available on iTunes and Google Play.
Are you a fan of HIIT workouts?
Do you ever lose track of counting your reps or is it just me?
